History of Rock Church

Steeped in history, Rock Presbyterian Church has been a family of believers for nearly three centuries. Rock Church was organized under the name of 'Elk River' by action of the New Castle Presbytery in 1720. The first building was located in nearby Lewisville, Pennsylvania and was probably a small log structure. The Stone Graveyard built next to this early church, though no longer in use, is still maintained by the present congregation. Some of the markers there date back to the 1730's.

The present church building was erected in 1761. It was remodeled in 1788, 1844, 1872, and again in 1900. The Session House is reportedly only a few years younger the an the church building and served as the home of Rock Academy for many years. The remodeling of this building was completed in 1964- equipping it to serve as a place for small group meetings, Church School classes, and a preparation area for our choirs.

At the crest of the hill, the Church House was built in 1953. Since its construction, it has housed most of our Church School classes and has served as a banquet hall for our church suppers and social activities. We also serve the community by allowing several civic organizations to hold meetings and events there. Today, our membership numbers about 140.
